Pray for the Good Folks Up in Fargo!

One thing I learned about when I lived in Fargo is their flood problems.
Fargo is flat as a pancake pretty much, the only place I've ever lived like that. It also gets very cold in winter--the ground freezes hard and deep. Fargo is separated from Morehead Minnesota by the Red River. Remember that old song? "I remember the Red River Valley".. Well the Red river can be a blessing sometimes, but it is also a dangerous thing.

When Spring comes to Fargo it is not unusual for the Red River to overflow its banks. The folks up in Fargo generally will all pitch in together and fill sand bags to build 'dykes' along the river. The year we were there I think the river 'crested' at about 30 feet--that is not so good. At 18 feet it will flood.

Why? Well with spring rains and melting snows there is a great deal of water--but the ground is still pretty frozen this time of year, so it will not absorb water, and since Fargo is flat--there really isn't anyplace for the water to go--except 'to town'.

There are houses along the river and it is near the center of town.

This year they are expecting the river to crest--likely by Saturday this week at 41 feet! That is 10 feet deeper than when I was there!

This means they could well be in for a horrific flood.Flooding that could become even worse if it freezes--which frankly in March in Fargo-- its going to freeze.

Please pray for these good folk as they work so hard to fill those sand bags. Its such a nice place to live--friendly and caring people there-- little crime, not so much unemployment.. just a nice place-- unfortunately also a pretty darn cold place in the long winter though.

Pray they can get that dyke high and strong enough and that it won't be raining or freezing anytime soon.

Thanks so much!
